Alcona Park

Posted on November 22, 2023November 22, 2023 By OnlineCoord

Alcona Park is located on the historic Au Sable River floodwaters above the Alcona Dam, this 1100 acre park has three miles of shoreline on each side of this trophy fish producing river. The park is surrounded by the Huron National Forest and is a favorite home away from home for many vacationers.

Amenities:

Full hookup campgrounds, cabins to rent, shower house with flush toilets, beautiful lake, a township park based on the dammed Au Sable River.

Pros:

  • Very dark skies (closest to AA), safe, low cost, best observing/imaging spots are:
    • Near the boat launch parking lot
    • At the shore in the primitive camping area
  • Park is open till Thanksgiving
  • Ice cream novelties sold for cheap at the office
  • Grocery store is only 5 miles away

Cons:

  • Campers love to stoke big fires and shine big lights so you need to get away from them at the above 2 spots
  • Crowded on weekends in summer
  • Can be humid due to lakeside location
  • 3-hour drive
